Once again, a notice that John is spinning vinyl (not really though I understand that some of the DJs do) at www.cfyt.ca tonight, 7-9 PM Cape Breton time, 6-8 PM Ontario time, 3-5 PM Yukon time. An Hour On the John has turned into Hours on the John as he's also working a spot on Sundays while a fellow DJ is away, 9-7 PM Cape Breton time, 8-10 PM Ontario time, 5-7 PM Yukon time. To listen in, just click on the post header above, or here -- www.cfyt.ca, and go to "listen online" and follow the instructions for your computer. As always, be patient, as the online shows don't start until the DJ is in place.

Spring-like winter
I am home from Goderich where I spent the last two weeks with my parents. My father had a small stoke and I had to be sure he was OK, and my mother able to manage his care. He is OK enough, and she is more than able.
I returned to a very cold but only snow-dusted Cape Breton. Yesterday the North River was a sheet of glass, water running below -- and the river bottom itself -- eerily visible. The ice had just become thick enough for skating. The picture above, taken by Mary Ann Wilson, is of Carol Kennedy making her magic on her skates. Carol lives on the Murray Road overlooking North River. Today it's raining and it is to pour with wind-driven rain before the day is over. So goes the ice, and this exceptional January continues.

Mackenzie's mom, Tanja Westland, has opened her own child care business in Dawson City, Yukon. It's called Creative Roots Learning Centre. To run her own program has been Tanja's dream for a long time and she has worked tirelessly this last while to achieve it. I am so very proud of her. Well done, Tanja! We send you our very best wishes for a successful venture.

North Shore and District Fire Department New Year's lobster supper
For three years now, the local volunteer firefighters in our North Shore and District Fire Department host a New Year's lobster supper for the St. Ann's Bay and surrounding area community. Along with a happy hour (nice red wine this year, Don, thanks) with snacks and great visiting opportunities, the meal features tables laid with linen (and plastic bibs), fresh lobster (of course -- thanks to Clearwater for their help), rolls, potato salad, deveilled eggs, salady bits, chocolate mints & toothpicks (always a good idea with lobster), and dessert, everything homemade by volunteers. It's a labour-intense event, and the people who make it happen work very hard for us. This year, Santa made a visit to distribute gifts exchanged between fire department members.
So, I'd like to thank the North Shore and District Fire Department, and most particularly all of their hard-working and able helpers, for everything they have done, and do, for our community. Well done all!
