Seaweed, another view

Went back to look at the typewriter and just above it along the stream was a piece of frozen seaweed. It brought to mind some lovely alien crab, from Mars perhaps. What do you think?

All washed up

Found this typewriter by a wee stream that flows directly into the ocean. Too small a stream for the machine to have come down it, I think, so it must have washed in from the sea.

St. Ann's Bay Players presents Bedtime Stories

Andy -- part of a cast of wonderful local actors -- is in a play (with mature subject matter!) directed by Bev Brett, to be performed by St. Ann's Bay Players. Here's what Bev has to say about SABP and Bedtime Stories by Norm Foster. (Click on poster to enlarge)

"I chose Bedtime Stories, by Norm Foster, a Maritime playwright, as much for actor development as play content, as it offers the opportunity to rehearse separately six mini-plays and so accommodates people with differing schedules.

The St. Ann's Bay Players has always done comedy well. The comedies I choose invariably have a dark or satirical side, and the dramas always contain some humour. Since beginning theatre here 30 years ago, I've followed the Irish tradition. This one is different. It's a light comedy but with really strong characters and our company's strength is in its character actors. Bedtime Stories gives each actor at least one solid role to sink their teeth into.

Our audience loves comedy. Our last play, Maritime Way of Life, is a hard act to follow proving beyond a doubt that people really do love foremost plays about themselves. But Norm Foster is a proven commodity. He knows his comedy. I enjoy the play, and with the comedy, it has some serious moments as well. It also has lots of great surprises."

Here is a precis of the play:

Eddie, a down and out local radio host whose unhappy and very vocal wife is packing up to move back to Alberta without him, holds a contest and the lucky winners are 50-something Betsy & Lou. The only thing they have to do to collect their prize is to make love on the radio.

That's the first of six hilarious and poignant mini-plays that include a high school dating disaster revisited twenty-two years later by a dying man and the most popular girl from the school. Two bumbling thieves who enter a house to discover more than they bargained for. A fifty year old shock-rocker who needs to get a teen-aged groupie out of his hotel room. And an aging accident-prone stripper who is trying desperately to keep her job by developing a new routine.

Cast: Chris Carmichael, Kirsten Longva, Mary Ann Wilson, Yvonne Le Blanc, Joey Burroughs, Amby MacDonald, Sue Browne, Wayne Plante and Andy Watt

The play runs:

Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, March 24 - 26 at 7:30 PM.

Saturday, March 27 will be a pub night starting at 8 PM (so you will then also be able to join the community at the Italian supper hosted by the North Shore and District Fire Department from 5:30 - 7:30 PM).

Sunday, March 28 at 2 PM.

Tickets: Adults $12, Students $8. For information or to reserve tickets call 929-2456

TBA -- I'll add a little history of St. Ann's Bay Players in my next post.

An Hour On the John

It's that day of the week again, and this Friday, after story time, John will be hosting his all-request show, so if you asked for some tunes, listen in, and if you didn't listen in anyway to hear what other people requested.

To listen in click on:

www.cfyt.ca

Now click on "listen online" and follow the instructions to set up your computer. For those of you (like me) who tried to listen last week, please try again. There was a glitch, as happens sometimes, and the show didn't make it online.

John's show starts at 7 PM CB time, 6 PM Ontario time, 3 PM Yukon time. And if you want to hear a story first, tune in a half-hour earlier.

John will also be sitting in for someone on Saturday, if you're free and awake, at midnight CB time, 11 PM Ontario time, 8 PM Yukon time.

Send comments or requests to John at: anhouronthejohn@gmail.com

Or join John on his Facebook fan site where you can find information about the show and make comments or requests by clicking on:

Snow, rain and Nancy Dawson

I just finished reading my friends Susan Brown's & Randy Sherman's blog from their boat Nancy Dawson, all about hiking up and down gorgeous mountains around Leinster Bay, snorkeling coral fields, seeing turtles and squid, drinking rum etc. Thank god for the wee biting bugs or I might think they were in paradise! So here are a few pictures of the winter they are avoiding that arrived over the last two days here in Nova Scotia, winter that might in fact disappear if the rain that's driving down right now has its way. We aren't being visited by bugs, but we did have a moose and her young one stop by for a nibble on our wee trying-to-survive pines yesterday. Also including a pic of some of the fairy spruce removed from the back of our property.
