A new year: 2012

The Laughing Heart

your life is your life
don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission.
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is a light somewhere.
it may not be much light but
it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can’t beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
your life is your life.
know it while you have it.
you are marvelous
the gods wait to delight
in you.

-- Charles Bukowski

Auld Lang Syne: Robert Burns

1

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days o' lang syne?

And for auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

2

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

Chorus

3

We twa hae run about the braes
And p'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary foot
Sin auld lang syne.

Chorus

4

We twa hae paidl'd i' the burn,
Frae mornin' sun till dine;
But sea between us braid hae roar'd
Sin auld lang syne.

Chorus

5

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right gude-willy waught,
For auld lang syne.

Chorus

Happy New Year! Love the Bukowski! In fact after reading your post, I showed it to my husband Tom who a few years ago immersed himself in Bukowksi, became a little frustrated and wrote a poem about his feelings. I will post it on my blog just for fun.

Hope you are feeling better.
